It’s hard for a brand to stand out in the social media world, so I  understand why companies resort to edgy marketing but where is the line? 

Bolthouse Farms new Food Porn Index website is irresponsible regardless of how they spin their “encouraging healthy eating” message.

Targeting a family-oriented market and “rebranding” WTF to mean What The Food exhibits questionable standards as well.

Can we all stop and think for a moment about the messages we’re sending to our young’uns as they try to make sense of their world?

It isn’t the first time I’ve seen this “selling strategy”. What happened to advertising for the average woman? 

Many argue that the average American woman is a size 12 and using that average woman in clothing catalogs isn’t sensible for an advertiser. Ok, I get it. Advertisers don’t want too much reality.

I’m all for aiming ads at the ideal average woman’s size, call her a “Perfect 6” or a “Curvaceous 8”.

Where designers have lost their marbles is not in Magazine Editorials or Look Books, where we all know images are retouched and models pose under unrealistic circumstances. In a catalog, where images are supposed to speak to the consumer, I’m calling WTF on this trend of retailers using 5’9″ models wearing a size zero (actual screenshot above). Not only can we not envision how that dress will look on anything wider than a hanger, but it makes me wonder: Are your clothes so poorly cut that you can’t hang them on an average body and still have them look decent?

At some point in this vanity game retailers and designers need to face the fact that only two things can come of an unrealistic sales display of garments:

1- We aren’t buying clothing that only looks good on stick figures, so your sales drop.

2- If we take a leap of faith and buy, there’s a good chance you’ll be seeing a high rate of returns. Your sales still drop.

So tell ya what… How about we start using models with body types that are, at the least, appealing to female shoppers in these online catalogs.

Because I’m a lot of things, but I’m nobody’s Size 0.

On today’s “what is this world coming to” list is the new cosmetic procedure implanting shiny jewelry into the eyeball. C’monnn, really??

 This only goes to prove that if you’re willing to pay, there’s a doctor on Park Avenue willing to oblige. Until someone loses and eyeball and sues. And we wonder why medical malpractice insurance is so high? 

Want something permanent that’s painful to remove? Get a tattoo. Leave your eyeballs au naturale. Your mother will thank you.

Let’s get this straight… We cram a protein from one object into the seed of another object forcing a genetic mutation so that food can grow in a way that some Corporate Executive has deemed “more profitable.” Then, when we eat a bunch of this mutated “food” and our bodies start getting all funky we act clueless. Isn’t it time to open our eyes and realize the ingesting mutated cells can create mutated cells? Hello… we are made of cells, not steel. We live, we breath, we morph.
When we consume GMO foods, we are ingesting a food that was inserted with a gene that caused massive mutations in the plant’s DNA. That same gene may transfer to our cells…

The food allergy and gluten intolerance fields are full of unknowns, but circumstantial evidence is building that there’s a direct correlation between allergies and vertigo. The study was funded by the NIH and was conducted by researchers at Johns Hopkins. They used data from a national health survey of 860 kids between 6 and 18. They looked at the connection between the levels of antibacterials and preservatives found in the children’s urine and the presence of IgE antibodies in their blood. IgE antibodies are chemicals your body produces in response to allergens, and they become noticeably elevated in people who have allergies. What they found was that kids who had had high levels of antimicrobial agents in their urine also had high levels of IgE antibodies. They were looking at seven different ingredients that have previously been shown to interfere with endocrine function in animals—bisphenol A (the newest scourge in plastics); triclosan; benzophenone-3; and propyl, methyl, butyl and ethyl parabens, which are found in lots of personal-care products and also in some foods and medications. In the end, they found that it was triclosan and both propyl and butyl parabens that were associated with higher allergy risk. What do all three of them have in common? The United States grows more varieties of GM crops than any other country, including maize, soybeans, cotton, canola, sugarbeet, alfalfa, papaya and squash. Global area planted with biotech crops increased by 10 percent last year to reach 148m hectares, making it the fastest adopted crop technology in the history of modern agriculture, according to a new analysis. The International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications (ISAAA), a non-profit organization which promotes the adoption of biotech crops, said in its new report that the United States still uses more genetically modified (GM) seeds than any other country, but Brazil had the largest increase for the second year running, with area planted to biotech crops rising 19 percent in 2010. Commercial planting of GM crops began in 1996, with 1.7m hectares planted that year, and over 15 years of cultivation, the total area devoted to GM crops increased 87-fold, to reach 148m hectares in 2010.
